Nursery

Our Approach

At Bloom Nursery our approach to learning is heavily influenced by the Reggio Emilia perspective, holistic viewpoint of child development and Forest School principles.

About Reggio Emilia

The Reggio Emilia approach was developed by teacher Loris Malaguzzi and the parents residing in the Italian town also known as Reggio Emilia. This parent - teacher collaboration is central to the approach, that learning is a collaborative process and that the child sits in the centre of it all, as the driver of their own learning. Like Malaguzzi and the parents from northern Italy, we at Bloom Nursery believe that children are competent and inquisitive individuals with limitless potential. We view children as active participants in co-constructing their own knowledge.

About Forest School

Through implementing Forest School practices and principles, Bloom offers a fluid curriculum that focuses on child-led outdoor play that promotes curiosity and exploration. These forest school sessions promote all aspects of children’s early years development, especially their holistic health.

About The EYFS

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to inform our understanding of children’s learning and development from birth to five years old. This further ensures that the level of care we offer is of the highest calibre.

The primary aspects of the EYFS are:

  • Seven Areas of Learning
Personal, Social, Emotional Development,Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding ofthe World, Expressive Arts and Design.
  • Learning Through Play
Focus on play based learning and child initiated activities.
  • Individual Child Focus
Observations and assessments are used to both inform and tailor activities to each child’s unique needs and interests.
  • Safeguarding and Welfare
Strongly emphasis on guaranteeing children’s safety and wellbeing.

Our Methodology

  • Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs
  • ‘Seen, Heard and Understood’
  • Environment
  • Wellbeing

Our methodology encompasses Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs, the fundamental concept that iterates that in order for a child’s higher growth needs to be satisfied their lower level needs must initially be met. This means that our first priority is to meet the child’s physiological needs through providing children with nutritious and fortifying meals, as well as water, warmth and rest. Our indoor setting provides children with a warm home base. Once we have satisfied their physiological needs, our next focus is their safety needs. It is essential that every child feels emotionally secure, has a safety net against accidents or illness and their adverse impacts, and has good health and wellbeing.

The third need known as ‘love and belonging’ is possibly the most vital of all the needs in childhood as it is intrinsic to developing social skills and forming relationships with peers, teachers and caregivers. We strongly believe that this need generally overrides the previous need as it is paramount that every child experiences a sense of connection, acceptance, professional love, trust and friendship. Subsequently, we focus on fostering a child’s self-esteem and providing opportunities for recognition. Finally, through offering children the opportunity to express their creativity through art or models we believe that they are able to experience personal growth and a sense of accomplishment.

Due to the nature of our methodology which also puts a strong emphasis on children being seen, heard and understood we are constantly motivated to create an atmosphere of warmth, safety and trust. We strive to ensure that every child feels valued, their ideas and opinions recognised and appreciated. We pay close attention to the emotional state of every child and place a heavy importance on fostering healthy and loving connections. We believe that creating an environment where children feel free safe and cherished is pivotal in facilitating emotional well-being which leads to children thriving. At Bloom Nursery, our purpose is to deliver curated education for the unique child. Our core belief is that the child’s wellbeing is paramount to the ecosystem of the child’s learning and development. Without the wellbeing of the child accounted for the child cannot thrive or progress developmentally.

At Bloom Nursery,
We believe that nutrition is key so naturally the day begins with a hearty bowl of porridge with seeds to fuel the minds and bodies of our children before we begin our exploration outdoors. Snacks are also available between meals as we believe that children function better when fully sated than not. When making our porridge, we consider the allergens of every child. Our soft start finishes at 9:00 am to give us time to change into appropriate weatherproof gear and from 9:30 am until 11:30 am we spend our time in Highgate Woods exploring, discovering and engaging in child-led woodland activities.

Rest of The Day
Upon arrival at the nursery, we once again wash our hands before sitting down for lunch. As we strongly believe in promoting independence in our learners we select a small group of children to assist us with prepping the tables for lunch. We ensure that every child has the opportunity to do this by selecting a new group every week.

From 1 pm until 2:30 pm, we offer children who still require an afternoon nap, the opportunity to nap. Those children who have out grown nap time are able to engage in free-flow play, as well as focused group activities such as cooking, baking, sewing, etc.

Closing and Pick-up

A story session commences at 3:30pm before the children sit down for afternoon tea which finishes at 4:15pm. The day ends with a time for reflection and songs before the 4:30pm pick-up. During pick-up we will inform you on your child’s time at Bloom, this may include an observation of your child’s play, behaviour, work or wow moment!

This informal chat will also give you the opportunity to share information relevant to your child to better equip us with supporting your child in the best possible way. We strongly believe that family partnership is crucial to ensuring that your child is fully understood and all their needs are met.
